The Virginia YMCA sponsors school-based service clubs which stress leadership development and community service. These clubs are called Hi-Y, which means high school YMCA. The first such club was organized in Chapman, Kansas in 1889, and was for boys only. Later came Tri-Hi-Y, a club for girls. Today, most clubs are co-ed and are called Hi-Y or Youth & Government. Hi-Y clubs perform school and community service projects and also participate in the Virginia YMCA's model government programs.

Hi-Y Council Meeting

Hi-Y Leadership Council

The Hi-Y Leadership council meets annually for leadership training. Members also have direct input into YMCA’s planning process by choosing that year's Wildcard Service Project. Each club can nominate 2-3 outstanding students to serve on the Hi-Y Leadership Council.

Ace Award

The Ace Award is a distinguished award for affiliated clubs. To qualify for the Ace Award, at least 50% of club members must participate in service projects, including the Wildcard Service Project chosen by the Hi-Y Council. The club must also promote their service through the local media.

This year's Wildcard Service Project theme is helping those affected by the economy. Clubs can help by holding food and clothing drives, volunteering at a soup kitchen, or helping out at Habitat for Humanity, among other things.
